Will iPhone 17 Go on Sale Black Friday? What to Expect in 2026

Updated on | 12 mins read

Nobody wants to pay $929 for an iPhone 17 in October and then watch the price fall three weeks later. Black Friday lands on November 27 this year, and with the iPhone 18 Pro on shelves since September 18, holding off seems sensible. Here is what actually tends to happen to the iPhone 17's price over the sale, and where the real savings sit.

Is a Black Friday sale on the iPhone 17 likely? From Apple, probably not: Apple's past Black Friday events gave gift cards rather than price cuts, and the gift cards went on older models. Carriers are expected to advertise big iPhone 17 discounts again, but those are usually monthly bill credits tied to a trade-in, a new line or a 24- to 36-month plan. A Plug Certified iPhone 17 was listed from $769.99 on October 22, 2026, unlocked and with no plan attached.

The Short Answer: Maybe, but Not From Apple

The iPhone 17 can get cheaper on Black Friday, but the discount almost always comes from someone other than Apple, and it usually comes with strings. Here is how the three kinds of seller tend to handle it:

  • Apple: Holds its own price and adds an Apple Gift Card on selected models. Last year, the iPhone 17 wasn't one of them.
  • Carriers: Advertise the biggest numbers ("free," "up to $1,000 off"), paid out as monthly bill credits while you keep the line.
  • Retailers: Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and Target run their own Black Friday deals, sometimes as a gift card, sometimes as a price cut, and sometimes only on phones activated with a carrier. Prices have to be checked on the day.

The catch is that a "deal" and a lower price are two different things. A carrier deal can save you real money, but only if you were going to stay with that carrier for two or three years anyway. If you'd rather skip the plan, Plug keeps its iPhone 17 Black Friday deals in one place.

What Apple Actually Does on Black Friday

Apple has run a Black Friday shopping event in recent years, and it pays out in gift cards, not markdowns. As reported at the time, here is what the iPhone part of the last two events looked like:

  • 2025: A $75 Apple Gift Card with the iPhone 16 or iPhone 16 Plus, and a $50 gift card with the iPhone 16e. The iPhone 17 line, then brand new, wasn't on the list, and neither was the iPhone 16 Pro.
  • 2024: A $75 Apple Gift Card with the iPhone 15, iPhone 14 or iPhone SE.

The pattern is easy to see. The gift card goes on the phones Apple is moving on from, and the newest models sit out. This year the iPhone 17 is the older model, since the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale September 18, 2026. That makes a gift card on the iPhone 17 more plausible than it was last year, though Apple hadn't announced anything about Black Friday 2026 when this was written.

Even then, a gift card is store credit for your next Apple purchase. It doesn't lower what you pay for the phone today.

What the iPhone 17 Costs Right Now

Apple's iPhone 17 page, checked October 22, 2026, lists the 256GB iPhone 17 at $929 unlocked. The lower $899 price applies only with Apple's $30 carrier connectivity discount, which requires activating the phone on AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon. That is higher than the iPhone 17's launch price, so the arrival of the iPhone 18 Pro didn't bring the older phone's price down at Apple's own store.

For comparison, Apple lists the new iPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 and the iPhone 18 Pro Max from $1,299.

You may see headlines saying Apple raised prices across its older models or quietly dropped a model from its lineup. Apple's own pages don't say either, so treat those as reports until Apple confirms them. What Apple's page shows today is the number above.

Here is where a Plug Certified iPhone 17 sits against it, checked on Plug's iPhone 17 collection the same day (prices move with the market):

iPhone 17, 256GB Price on October 22, 2026 Strings
Apple, unlocked $929 None
Apple, with carrier connectivity discount $899 Must activate on AT&T, T-Mobile or Verizon
Plug Certified, unlocked From $769.99 None

This means a Plug Certified iPhone 17 cost about $159 less than Apple's unlocked price on the day this was written, before any Black Friday promotion from anyone.

Carrier Deals: What the Fine Print Says

Carrier deals are where the large iPhone 17 discounts show up, and nearly all of them are paid as monthly bill credits rather than a lower price at checkout. Apple's carrier-offers page, checked October 22, 2026, shows the current terms:

Carrier Trade-in offer (up to) How it's paid If you leave early
AT&T $900 Monthly bill credits over a 36-month installment plan; needs an upgrade or a new line Credits stop and you owe the remaining device balance
T-Mobile $1,000, any condition Instant trade-in credit at checkout plus monthly bill credits over 24 or 36 months, on premium plans Credits stop and the remaining balance is due; credits also end if you pay the phone off early
Verizon $840, any condition Instant trade-in credit plus monthly bill credits over 36 months, with 0% financing Credits are tied to the 36-month plan; check the terms before you sign

Offers change often, so check the terms on the day you buy.

How Bill Credits Work: A Worked Example

A bill credit works a bit like a gym membership that refunds you a little each month you keep going. Stop going, and the refunds stop too.

Take a $1,000 credit spread over 36 months (an illustrative figure, not a specific offer):

  • Each month: about $27.78 comes off your bill.
  • After 12 months: you've received about $333.
  • If you switch carriers then: the remaining $667 or so in credits disappears, and you still owe what's left on the phone.

Over 24 months the same $1,000 works out to about $41.67 a month. Either way, "free" means the phone is paid off by credits only if you stay for the full term and keep the qualifying plan.

Retailers and Unlocked Pricing

Major retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and Target will run Black Friday deals, but we couldn't find a reliable record of what they charged for an unlocked iPhone 17 last year. So there's no trustworthy number to forecast from.

If you shop retailers on the day, compare the out-the-door price for the same storage size, leave any case or accessories bundled in out of the math, and check whether the phone is unlocked or tied to a carrier activation. Some retailer iPhone offers require activating on a specific carrier, which can bring back the same bill-credit strings.

Because an unlocked iPhone isn't tied to one network, you can stay on your plan or change carriers whenever a better rate comes along, with no device balance to clear.

The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max follow the same pattern: little or nothing from Apple, bigger numbers from carriers. Last Black Friday, T-Mobile's no-cost offer covered the iPhone 17 Pro as well as the base model, with a trade-in on an eligible unlimited plan, and it advertised up to $1,100 off any iPhone 17 model, paid as 24 monthly bill credits.

Apple's iPhone shop page, as read on October 22, 2026, didn't list the iPhone 17 Pro alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17e and iPhone 16. Apple hasn't said anything about it, so check Apple's site directly before you plan around buying one there.

On Plug's iPhone 17 collection the same day, a Plug Certified iPhone 17 Pro with 512GB started at $1,149.99, and a Plug Certified iPhone 17 Pro Max with 512GB at $1,319.99. Both are unlocked.

Wait or Buy Now: A Quick Test

Which of the Black Friday offers are the best deals for you comes down to four questions. Here is how to work through them:

1. Do You Need a New Line?

If you're adding a line anyway (a teen's first phone, say), carrier Black Friday offers aimed at new lines can be worth waiting for.

2. Will You Stay 24 to 36 Months?

If there's any chance you'll switch carriers within three years, add up what you'd lose in remaining credits using the example above.

3. Does the Trade-In Cover It?

Many of the largest credits depend on what you trade in. Check what your current phone actually earns before you count on the advertised maximum.

4. Is a No-Strings Price Already Lower?

Compare the carrier offer's total cost over the full term against an unlocked phone you own outright. If the unlocked price is close, the freedom to switch is worth something.

The Plug Certified Route

A Plug Certified iPhone 17 is the same phone, with the same features, without the plan attached, priced below Apple's unlocked price today with no plan attached. Every Plug Certified iPhone goes through Plug's 90+ Point Inspection, has a battery health of 80% or higher, and ships unlocked so it works with any carrier.

  • Warranty: Plug's 12-Month Warranty covers hardware and software faults from normal use.
  • Returns: You get 30-day returns, set out on Plug's guarantee and warranty page.
  • Free shipping: On US orders.
  • Condition grades: Good, Great and Excellent describe cosmetic condition only; all three pass the same testing and get the same warranty.

Want a plan ready to go? The Connected Pack iPhone 17 ships with one month of Boost unlimited 5G service in the box (US only, eSIM only). On activation, choose "Activate with eSIM."

Plug carries the "Best Experience" label from Wirecutter, The New York Times' product-review site, in its guide to the best place to buy used iPhones.

Every device carries our name and our warranty. That's our promise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I wait until Black Friday to buy a new iPhone 17?

Yes, if you're opening a new line and plan to stay put. Apple's sale has run four days in recent years (November 28 to December 1 in 2025), so its offers have carried through Cyber Monday, which is November 30, 2026. That gives you the whole weekend to compare terms instead of buying on Friday morning.

How much would an iPhone 17 be on Black Friday?

Nobody can say yet, and any number you see before Apple and the carriers announce is a guess. As a reference point, Apple listed the 512GB iPhone 17 at $1,129 unlocked on October 22, 2026. If you need the extra storage, that's the price to hold any deal against.

Do iPhones go cheaper on Black Friday?

Older ones more than new ones. Deal roundups from last November, which we cover in how much iPhones drop on Black Friday, showed savings of roughly 5% to 13% on older iPhone models, while the newest line saw mostly credits and gift cards. With the iPhone 18 Pro out, the iPhone 17 is now in that older group, which helps, but don't expect a large straight price cut.

When can I expect the iPhone 17 price to drop?

Apple doesn't announce price changes ahead of time, so there's no date to wait for. The private market moves faster: third-party data from October 21, 2026, put a 256GB iPhone 17 in good condition around $583 from private sellers. That's an as-is sale: usually no testing, no warranty, and returns are whatever the seller agrees to.

Who has free iPhone 17 deals?

Last Black Friday, Verizon offered the iPhone 17 at no cost with a new line on its MyPlan service, no trade-in needed, paid as 36 monthly credits. That's three years on one carrier to collect the full value. Expect similar offers this year, and price the plan across all 36 months, not just the phone.
