iPhone 17 Unlocked Black Friday Deals: Are There Any?
Updated on | 11 mins readMost Black Friday ads for the iPhone 17 lead with a big number: hundreds off, sometimes a "free" phone. Read the small print and the number usually needs a new line, a trade-in or three years with one carrier. If what you want is an iPhone 17 that works with any carrier and owes nobody anything, the deals look a lot thinner.
Yes, there are unlocked iPhone 17 Black Friday deals, but they're small. Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27. Last year, outright cash discounts on an unlocked iPhone 17 were modest, and the big savings came with strings: a carrier plan, a new line or a trade-in, with the phone locked until it's paid off. The other way to pay less for an unlocked iPhone 17 is a certified pre-owned one, which costs less than new all year.

What "Unlocked" Means for an iPhone 17
An unlocked iPhone 17 works with any carrier that supports it, so you can keep your current plan, switch later or pick up a local eSIM when you travel. Think of it as a phone with no landlord. Nobody else gets a say in where it goes.
Here is how the lock works, according to Apple:
- Bought From Apple: An Apple iPhone bought straight from Apple is unlocked, and "once your new iPhone is activated, it remains unlocked" (Apple's iPhone 17 purchase page, read October 22, 2026).
- Financed Through a Carrier: An iPhone financed through a carrier stays locked to that carrier until the balance is paid in full.
- Who Can Remove the Lock: "Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone," according to Apple Support. Apple can't unlock it for a different carrier.
One more detail matters for the iPhone 17. Apple's spec page says it uses eSIM and is "not compatible with physical SIM cards." This means the phone needs a carrier that supports eSIM, and it can run two lines at once.
Unlocked Deal vs. Carrier Deal: How to Tell
An unlocked deal is a lower price on a phone you own outright on the day you buy it. A carrier deal is a discount paid back to you slowly through your bill, and it only holds while you stay. Most of the best-advertised Black Friday iPhone offers are the second kind. If you want to keep your carrier or switch later, the unlocked one is usually the better buy.
Here is what to look for in the small print before you hit "View Deal":
- A New Line or a Port-In: The offer only applies if you add a line or bring your number over from another carrier.
- A Trade-In: The headline number depends on handing over an eligible phone.
- "Up To" Language: "Up to $1,000" is a ceiling. What you actually get depends on the phone you hand over and the terms attached.
- Monthly Bill Credits: The savings show up as a credit on each bill, not as a lower price at checkout.
- A 36-Month Plan: The phone is paid off over three years, and it stays locked to the carrier until it is.
How 36-Month Credits Work
Bill credits run like a layaway plan you can't walk away from. You get the phone now, but the discount arrives a slice at a time over 36 months. Cancel service, or pay the phone off early, and the remaining credits disappear while whatever you still owe on the phone comes due.
A worked example: T-Mobile's Black Friday offer page has described an iPhone 17 offer of "up to $830" that needed a new line, a port-in and a plan of at least $85 a month with AutoPay, plus a $35 device connection charge. Spread over 36 months, $830 comes to about $23 a month in credits. Leave in month 12 and roughly two-thirds of that discount never arrives. AT&T's iPhone 17 offer has worked the same way: up to $930 in credits over 36 months, with an eligible trade-in. Carrier offers change often, so read the terms on the day you buy.
| Unlocked deal | Carrier deal | |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay | The sale price | The phone's price, less credits paid slowly |
| What you must do | Pay for the phone | Add a line, trade in, or pick a set plan |
| If you leave early | Nothing changes | Credits stop and the balance is due |
| Lock status | Unlocked from day one | Locked until paid in full |
What Last Year's Black Friday Looked Like
Last year's Black Friday brought little or no cash cut on a new, unlocked iPhone 17. Apple's 2025 holiday gift card offer covered iPhone 16 models and reportedly left the iPhone 17 out.
The other numbers from 2025 tell the same story:
- A Small Price Cut: The one outright retailer price cut we found was about $40 off, roughly 5%, at one big retailer on November 26, 2025.
- Gift Cards Instead of Discounts: Another big retailer offered $300 in e-gift cards on select iPhone 17 purchases through November 30, 2025. In last year's roundups, gift card bundles and trade-in boosts showed up more often than straight price cuts.
- Big Numbers With Conditions: Headlines of "up to $1,100" off were tied to a trade-in, a new line or bill credits, according to Forbes' November 28, 2025 roundup.
So is it worth waiting for Black Friday this year? For an unlocked phone, expect a small cut at some retailers, if any. Retailers are expected to start their iPhone 17 Black Friday deals earlier in November. Treat any 2026 figure you see before then as a prediction.
The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a different case. It launched at $1,199 for 256GB in September 2025, and Apple reportedly stopped selling the Pro and Pro Max in September 2026 when the next models arrived. Whatever stock is left sits with other sellers, so Pro Max prices now vary from store to store.
What an Unlocked iPhone 17 Costs Right Now
Apple's iPhone 17 page, read October 22, 2026, lists the 256GB model at $929 unlocked and the 512GB at $1,129 unlocked. That's the benchmark for any Black Friday price you see.
The same page shows trade-in values of "up to" $1,000 with T-Mobile, $900 with AT&T and $840 with Verizon, each with an eligible trade-in. Those are carrier offers, so they come with the strings above.
Certified pre-owned and refurbished unlocked iPhone 17 listings we checked in October 2026 ran roughly $735 to $810 for 256GB. Against Apple's $929, that's about $120 to $195 less, before any Black Friday promotions. Plug Certified iPhone 17 prices come from the live collection and move often, so check the current "from" price there on the day you shop. All prices here come from the sellers' own pages, not hands-on testing by Plug, and they can change at any time.
Check Before You Buy: 4 Steps
Whether you're buying new, certified or from a private seller, four checks in Settings tell you what you're really getting.
1. Carrier Lock
On the phone itself, scroll Settings > General > About until you reach Carrier Lock. You want to see "No SIM restrictions" there, which means unlocked. A carrier's name there means it's locked to that carrier.
2. Activation Lock
Apple Support's advice is plain: "Don't buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled." If the startup screen says "iPhone Locked to Owner," the previous owner still controls the phone.
3. Battery Health
Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health (on iOS 16.1 or later, it's Battery Health & Charging). Check the Maximum Capacity figure.
4. Parts and Service History
Go to Settings > General > About and check Parts and Service History. Apple lists it among the things to look at before you buy a preowned iPhone.
Where Unlocked iPhone 17 Savings Really Come From: Plug Certified
If you want an unlocked iPhone 17 for less, without a plan or a trade-in attached, a Plug Certified one is the route. Every phone Plug sells is unlocked and works with any carrier, so the Carrier Lock line already reads "No SIM restrictions" when it arrives.
Each Plug Certified iPhone 17 arrives with:
- Inspected First: A 90+ Point Inspection and a clean before the phone goes on sale.
- A Checked Battery: Battery health of 80% or higher, so step 3 above is already done.
- Plug's 12-Month Warranty: It covers hardware and software faults under normal use. It doesn't cover accidental damage.
- 30-Day Returns: You'll find the details on Plug's guarantee and warranty page.
- Free Shipping: On US orders.
- Bundles if You Want Them: Plug Packs and the Starter Pack are ready-made bundles, and Plug sells accessories too.
- Pay Over Time if You Want: Afterpay and Affirm are available at checkout, with no carrier involved.
Across the store, Plug Certified devices cost up to 70% off retail. Condition grades (Good, Great, Excellent) describe looks only; every grade is fully tested and carries the same warranty. If you'd like service sorted on the same day, the Connected Pack includes a month of Boost unlimited 5G with any Plug Certified pre-owned phone. It's eSIM, so choose "Activate with eSIM" when you set it up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the iPhone 17 go on sale for Black Friday?
Not by much, going by last year. Expect a small cut at some retailers, if any, and don't count on Apple lowering its own unlocked price. Set your benchmark now, so that on November 27 you can tell a real price cut from a gift card or a plan offer.
Where is the cheapest place to buy an unlocked iPhone 17?
Usually a certified pre-owned seller rather than a new one. Compare on the same storage size, since 512GB costs about $200 more new. Look for a warranty and a return window as well as the price, since a lower sticker from a private seller comes as-is.
Is there any Black Friday deal on the iPhone 17?
Yes. Plenty, but most are carrier deals: bill credits, new lines and trade-ins. If you already plan to stay with one carrier for three years, those can be worth it. If you might switch or travel, the unlocked price is the one to compare.
Are iPhone 17 Pro Max models on sale?
Some are. One big retailer still listed a 256GB unlocked Pro Max at $1,199.99 in October 2026, about the launch price, while some sellers have cut prices on larger storage sizes. Since Apple reportedly no longer sells it, compare stock across a few sellers and run the four Settings checks.
Does an unlocked iPhone 17 need a physical SIM?
No. The iPhone 17 doesn't take a physical SIM card at all. It stores eight or more eSIMs and runs two at once, so you can keep your home line active and add a travel eSIM abroad. Your carrier has to support eSIM for the line to work.
Before you pay for any iPhone 17 this Black Friday, open Settings > General > About on the phone in front of you, or ask the seller for a screenshot. "No SIM restrictions" next to Carrier Lock is the one line that tells you the deal is really unlocked.
