Used iPhone 15 Pro Max: What to Know Before Black Friday
Updated on | 12 mins readApple asked $1,199 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max when it launched in 2023. Three years later, the same phone turns up on resale listings for less than half that, and the gap between a good buy and a tired phone with a locked screen comes down to a few checks you can run in minutes.
A used iPhone 15 Pro Max is still a strong buy in late 2026 if three things check out: the battery shows a Maximum Capacity of 80% or higher, the phone is free of Activation Lock and carrier lock, and someone stands behind it with a warranty. Apple's own refurbished store listed it from $849 on October 22, 2026, and unlocked phones on resale marketplaces started at $541 the same day.

What You Get With the Pro Max That the Cheaper 15s Don't
The Pro Max is the only iPhone 15 with a 5x telephoto camera, and it shares the iPhone 15 Pro's titanium frame, faster USB port and Action button. Here is what each difference means for you:
- 5x Telephoto: A 12MP tetraprism telephoto camera gives 5x optical zoom in, part of a 10x optical zoom range. The refurbished iPhone 15 Pro stops at 3x. This means a sharper shot of a stage or a game from the stands.
- Titanium Build: The frame is titanium, with a Ceramic Shield front and a textured matte glass back. At 7.81 oz (221 g), it's still a phone you notice in a pocket.
- Pro Photo and Video Formats: Apple ProRAW, ProRes video up to 4K at 60 fps with external recording, Log video, and spatial video at 1080p, 30 fps. This means files made for editing afterward. If you never edit, you'll never miss them.
- USB 3: Transfers run at up to 10Gb/s. This means a long 4K clip moves to your computer in a fraction of the time.
- Action Button: It is a button you set to the job you want, Silent mode among them.
- Screen, Storage and Battery Life: A 6.7-inch OLED display, storage that starts at 256GB (with 512GB and 1TB options), and up to 29 hours of video playback.
These specs come from Apple's iPhone 15 Pro Max tech specs page, read October 22, 2026, not hands-on testing by Plug. If the camera is the reason you want this phone, Plug's post on Pro Max camera quality goes further. To see the whole lineup side by side, there is a refurbished iPhone 15 model comparison, and a separate guide to the refurbished iPhone 15 Plus.
Used, Plug Certified or From Apple: Three Ways to Buy
You can buy an iPhone 15 Pro Max three ways, and they differ less in the phone itself than in who checked it and who answers if something fails. Most phones you'll find now have had an owner before you, as with any used iPhone 15.
- Used, as-is: From a private seller or a marketplace. It's the cheapest route, and every check is yours to run. Some business sellers on marketplaces add a one-year limited warranty, but a private sale leaves the risk with you.
- Apple Certified Refurbished: Apple's own store, which sells these as Apple Certified Refurbished products. Apple says the phones come "with new battery and outer shell," get "full functional testing," and carry its "standard one-year limited warranty." Shipping and returns are free. It's the highest price of the three.
- Plug Certified: Plug's certification starts with a 90+ Point Inspection. Every phone passes it, arrives unlocked for any carrier, and has battery health of 80% or higher. It's covered by Plug's 12-Month Warranty (hardware and software faults under normal use, not accidental damage) and comes with 30-day returns.
Here is how the three compare side by side:
| Used (as-is) | Apple refurbished | Plug Certified | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery | Whatever the last owner left; you check it | New battery | Battery health 80% or higher |
| Lock status | You check it | Check the listing | Unlocked, works with any carrier |
| Condition | The seller's own grade | New outer shell | Good, Great or Excellent (looks only) |
| Warranty | Varies by seller | One-year limited warranty | Plug's 12-Month Warranty |
| Returns | Varies by seller | Free returns | 30-day returns |
| Price, October 2026 | Unlocked from $541 | From $849 (256GB) | From $628.99 |
Apple's route is the one with the new battery, and you pay for it. Plug checks the battery against an 80% floor instead of replacing it, prices the phone lower, and backs all of it for 12 months. Plug's process has outside backing too: Wirecutter, The New York Times' product-review site, named Plug the "Best Experience" for buying used iPhones. Every device carries our name and our warranty. That's our promise.
How to Check a Used Pro Max Before You Pay
Run these five checks, in this order, on any phone from any seller before money changes hands. The first four follow Apple's own guidance for buying a preowned iPhone.
1. Make Sure Activation Lock Is Off
Have the seller wipe the phone while you watch, then set it up yourself. Seeing an "iPhone Locked to Owner" screen means the deal ends there. Apple puts it in one line: "Don't buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled."
2. Confirm It's Unlocked
The Carrier Lock line sits under Settings > General > About. "No SIM restrictions" means the phone works with any carrier. Anything else means it's tied to one. The same check applies when you shop for an unlocked iPhone 15 Pro. Locked phones do sell for less: on October 22, 2026, one large marketplace had locked units from $443 against $541 for unlocked.
3. Read the Parts and Service History
On the same About screen (iOS 15.2 or later), Parts and Service History lists any parts that were replaced. The label to look for is "Genuine Apple Part." "Unknown" can mean an incomplete installation, a nongenuine part, a part that was used in another iPhone, or one that isn't working properly. Any of those deserves a question before you pay.
4. Check Battery Health
Maximum Capacity, under Settings > Battery > Battery Health, shows how much charge the battery holds now compared with when it was new. Think of a water bottle that slowly shrinks. Filled to the top, it's still full, it just holds less each year. On recent iOS versions, the same area can also show the cycle count and manufacture date. If the screen says battery health information isn't available, Apple notes that this happens with unknown or nongenuine batteries.
Where does 80% come from? The number is Apple's: iPhone 15 batteries are "designed to retain 80% of their original capacity at 1000 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions." At one full charge a day, 1,000 cycles takes about two and three-quarter years. So a phone reading 90% has more of that runway left than one reading 81%. It's a design target, not a promise for any single phone.
5. Test Face ID and Every Camera
Set up Face ID, then lock and unlock the phone a few times. Open the Camera app, switch through each zoom level including 5x, record a short video and play it back with the sound on. While the phone is in your hand, look along the frame edges and the corners of the back glass.
Condition and Grades: What Good, Great and Excellent Mean
Plug's grades describe looks only. Every grade is fully tested, cleaned and backed by the same 12-Month Plug Warranty, so the grade tells you how the outside looks and nothing about how the phone works.
Scuffs are a common complaint in pre-owned unboxing videos, so set your bar before you buy. If a spotless finish matters to you, pick the top grade. If the phone is going straight into a case, a lower grade is the same tested phone with more visible wear.
Grade names don't line up from seller to seller. One large marketplace, for example, uses mint ("pristine, no signs of wear"), good ("minor wear and tear") and fair ("noticeable wear and tear"). Read each seller's own definition before comparing prices across them.
What a Fair Price Looks Like
A fair price for an unlocked iPhone 15 Pro Max in late October 2026 falls between the marketplace floor of about $541 and Apple's $849, and where a phone lands depends on what comes with it. Here is the price ladder, dated:
- New at launch (2023): $1,199 for 256GB, Apple's price.
- Apple refurbished: $849 for 256GB (October 22, 2026), $350 under launch.
- Plug Certified: from $628.99 (October 21, 2026), about $220 under Apple's refurbished price, unlocked, with battery health of 80% or higher.
- Marketplace, unlocked: from $541 (October 22, 2026), with every check on you.
Prices move often, so treat these as a snapshot. Select a bigger storage size and every rung climbs. A listing far below the marketplace floor is a reason to run the five checks twice, not to hurry. Newer iPhone launches tend to push older models down gradually. Plug's post on iPhone 15 refurbished prices shows how the rest of the family is priced.
Black Friday 2026: How to Shop It
The weekend to plan around runs from Black Friday, Friday, Nov 27, 2026, to Cyber Monday, Nov 30. Deal coverage from mid-October already notes that sales now start before the day itself. We haven't found a reliable figure for how far used Pro Max prices drop that weekend, so shop on what's included, not on the size of the tag. Plug keeps its iPhone 15 Black Friday deals in one place, and there is a separate read on unlocked iPhone 15 Black Friday deals.
Here is the order to compare offers in:
- Battery Health First: A cheaper phone at 81% can leave you shopping for a fix sooner than a phone at 90%.
- Warranty Second: One year from Apple, 12 months from Plug, or whatever a marketplace seller puts in writing.
- Lock Status Third: Unlocked keeps your carrier choice open.
- Then the Price: Only once the first three match does the lower number win.
- If It's a Gift: An unlocked phone means you don't need to know the recipient's carrier, and Plug ships free on US orders.
Before you pay anyone for an iPhone 15 Pro Max, this Black Friday or any other day, open Settings and read three lines: Carrier Lock, Parts and Service History and Maximum Capacity. Plug's iPhone buying guide covers the same checks for other models.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many years does an iPhone 15 Pro Max last?
Apple doesn't publish a promise for how many years of software updates a model gets. What you can confirm today is that the iPhone 15 Pro Max runs iOS 26, per Apple's compatibility list. Past that, the battery usually wears before the A17 Pro chip feels slow, so the battery reading at purchase is your best guide to the years ahead.
Is there a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro Max available?
Yes. Apple added it to its US refurbished store on May 6, 2025, as Forbes reported. On October 22, 2026, Apple listed Black, White, Natural and Blue Titanium at every storage size, 1TB included. Plug's certified iPhone 15 collection shows which colors, storage sizes and grades are in stock on the day you look.
What did the iPhone 15 Pro Max cost new?
Apple launched it at $1,199 for 256GB in September 2023, and MacRumors reported $1,399 for 512GB and $1,599 for 1TB. At those larger sizes, Apple's refurbished prices on October 22, 2026 were $1,019 and $1,189, roughly $380 and $410 below launch. Treat launch prices as a yardstick for savings, not a current price.
Is it better to buy a refurbished iPhone from Apple?
It depends on what you want most. If a brand-new battery is worth paying the most for, Apple fits. If you'd rather keep the difference and take a battery that's been tested against a floor, a Plug Certified phone fits. A private sale costs least but leaves every check, and every failure afterward, with you alone.
