iPhone 15 Unlocked: Is It the Smart Post-Holiday Buy?

Updated on | 11 mins read

Christmas falls on a Friday this year, so for a lot of people the gift money arrives over the weekend of Saturday, December 26. If some of it is going toward a phone, an unlocked iPhone 15 is likely on the shortlist: recent enough to feel current, and priced well below Apple's newest models.

For most people, yes. An unlocked iPhone 15 works on any carrier, Apple lists it for iOS 27, and tested 128GB phones sold for roughly $375 to $430 at the refurbished sellers we checked on October 23, 2026, against a $799 launch price. The main thing you give up is Apple Intelligence, which runs on the iPhone 15 Pro and newer models but not the standard iPhone 15. Check the carrier lock, battery health and Activation Lock before you pay.

Who It Fits and Who Should Skip It

The iPhone 15 fits anyone who wants the core iPhone experience without paying new-phone prices. Apple's own store now lists the iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and newer models as the phones it sells new. Apple's iOS 27 page, dated October 22, 2026, lists all four iPhone 15 models.

It's a good fit if:

  • You want the main iPhone features: Apple's launch specs list the A16 Bionic chip, a 48MP main camera, the Dynamic Island and a USB-C port.
  • You want to keep your carrier choice open: an unlocked phone can move to a cheaper plan later without asking anyone's permission.

Skip it, or step up a model, if:

  • You want Apple Intelligence: the standard iPhone 15 doesn't support it. The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max do.
  • You want the newest camera controls: Camera Control and the Action button arrived on the standard iPhone with the iPhone 16.
  • You want a smoother screen: the iPhone 17 moved to a 120Hz display. The iPhone 15 runs at 60Hz.

What "Unlocked" Means on a Phone You Plug Into Any Carrier

Unlocked means the phone isn't tied to one carrier, so it accepts service from any of them. A carrier-locked phone only works with the carrier that sold it, until that carrier unlocks it.

A carrier-locked phone is a bit like a gift card that only works at one store: fine if that's your store, a problem if it isn't. Activation Lock is something else entirely. It's closer to buying a car while the last owner still has the only key.

Plug Certified phones all come unlocked, ready for whichever carrier you pick. From any other seller, treat "unlocked" in a listing as a claim and confirm it in Settings before you pay.

What an iPhone 15 Unlocked Costs Right Now

On October 23, 2026, a tested, unlocked iPhone 15 with 128GB sold for roughly $375 to $430 at the refurbished sellers we checked. Here is how that picture looked by seller type:

  • Plug Certified: Plug's iPhone 15 Series collection started from $388.99. That's the series starting price, so the exact model, storage and grade behind it can vary.
  • Other refurbished sellers: $374.99 (sold out when we looked) up to about $433 for a Good-grade 128GB phone. Excellent grades reached $539.99 at one electronics retailer.
  • Apple's refurbished store: listed the larger iPhone 15 Plus with 128GB at $659.
  • The launch price: Apple announced the iPhone 15 on September 12, 2023, at $799 for 128GB and $899 for 256GB.

A 256GB phone costs more than a 128GB one, as it did at launch, and grade and warranty length move the price too. Prices change often, so check each seller's live price on the day you buy. Plug's guide to iPhone 15 refurbished prices tracks how the numbers have moved over time. If the budget is tighter, cheap iPhones under $100 and clearance unlocked phones are worth a look too.

Three Checks Before You Pay

Three Settings screens tell you more than any product listing: carrier lock, battery health and Activation Lock. Here is what each one should show:

1. Carrier Lock: Look for "No SIM Restrictions"

Open Settings > General > About and find the Carrier Lock line. If it says "No SIM restrictions," the phone is unlocked. Anything else means a carrier still holds it.

Apple can't fix that for you. In Apple's words, "Only your current carrier can unlock your iPhone." An IMEI check report can be useful background, but it isn't a reliable stand-in for this screen.

2. Battery Health: 80% Is the Line

You'll find the numbers at Settings > Battery > Battery Health. On iOS 17.4 and later, that screen lists battery health, Maximum Capacity, cycle count, the manufacture date and the date of first use.

Why 80%? Apple's rule for iPhone 15 models is that the battery should keep 80 percent of its original capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles, under ideal conditions. That's nearly three years of one full charge a day. This means a phone well above 80% with a modest cycle count has plenty of battery health ahead of it. Plug sells phones with battery health of 80% or higher.

3. Activation Lock: Walk Away From "iPhone Locked to Owner"

If setup shows "iPhone Locked to Owner," the phone is still tied to someone else's Apple Account. Don't take it. Before money changes hands, the seller should erase the phone and remove it from their Apple Account, and you should see setup get past that screen.

Switching It to Your Carrier: eSIM Only

The U.S. iPhone 15 has no SIM tray, so your phone line moves over as an eSIM. If your current phone uses a physical SIM card, your carrier converts the line to an eSIM for you.

Here is how the switch usually goes:

  1. Coming from another iPhone: during setup, or later in Settings > Cellular > Set Up Cellular (some versions say Add eSIM), choose "Transfer From Nearby iPhone" if your carrier supports it.
  2. Coming from a phone with a SIM card: contact your carrier and ask them to move your line to an eSIM on the new phone.
  3. Before you wipe the old phone: make a call and send a text on the iPhone 15 to confirm the line moved.

Plug's guide to activating an unlocked iPhone 15 walks through each screen. If you'd rather start fresh, The Connected Pack pairs a Plug Certified phone with 3 months of Boost Mobile Unlimited Talk, Text & Data at $0*, provided by Plug. Starting month 4, it's $25/mo for life with AutoPay ($30/mo without). *Taxes and fees may apply.

iPhone 15 vs. 16 vs. 17: What You Actually Give Up

Mostly you give up Apple Intelligence, some chip headroom and a couple of newer controls. The size stays familiar until the iPhone 17, and the port stays the same across all three. Going by Apple's spec pages:

  • Chip: the iPhone 15 has the A16 Bionic; the iPhone 16 has the A18.
  • Apple Intelligence: not on the standard iPhone 15. It runs on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, and on the newer lines.
  • Buttons: the iPhone 15 has the Ring/Silent switch. The iPhone 16 adds the Action button and Camera Control.
  • Screen: the iPhone 15 and 16 both have a 6.1-inch 60Hz display. The iPhone 17 moves to a 6.3-inch 120Hz Always-On display.
  • Camera: the iPhone 17 adds a 48MP Ultra Wide camera.
  • Port: all three use USB-C. Apple lists the iPhone 17's port at USB 2 speeds, so a newer model won't move files any faster over a cable.

If Apple Intelligence is the deal breaker, look at the iPhone 15 Pro before jumping two generations. You can learn what the Pro adds in Plug's guide to the refurbished iPhone 15 Pro, and the refurbished iPhone 15 comparison sets the Plus, Pro and Pro Max side by side. Going the other way, the iPhone 13 Pro Max price and used iPhone 11 guides cover older phones.

Condition, Grades and Battery: What to Expect From Plug

Every Plug Certified iPhone 15 is unlocked, goes through Plug's 90+ Point Inspection and ships with battery health of 80% or higher. If you've been searching for a refurbished iPhone 15 unlocked, Plug Certified is the name for that process at Plug.

Plug grades phones Good, Great or Excellent, and the grade is about looks alone. A Good-grade iPhone 15 gets the same testing and cleaning as an Excellent one, and it works just the same.

Whatever the grade, the phone comes with Plug's 12-Month Warranty for hardware and software faults under normal use (accidental damage isn't covered), 30-day returns and free shipping on US orders.

Every device carries our name and our warranty. That's our promise.

Buying After Christmas: Gift Money, Return Windows and Timing

Buy when the phone you want is in stock at a price you're comfortable with, and inside a return window. CNET and Wirecutter coverage credits post-holiday phone deals to retailers, carriers and open-box or returned stock rather than Apple, and found no reliable January price drop for refurbished phones.

Return windows matter more than timing. Last year, for a sense of the calendar, Apple extended holiday returns to January 8, 2026, and two large retailers ran theirs to January 15, 2026, though phones may have been excluded at one of them. Those were 2025 terms, so check each seller's own terms on the day you buy.

Run the three checks on the day the phone arrives, while you can still send it back. For the full post-holiday sale calendar, see Plug's guide "Do iPhones Go on Sale After Christmas?"

The rule for this phone is simpler: if Carrier Lock says "No SIM restrictions," the battery reads 80% or higher and setup never asks for someone else's Apple Account, an iPhone 15 is a sound place to put your gift money.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an unlocked iPhone 15 worth?

It depends on which side of the sale you're on. Selling one brings in less than the prices sellers ask for a tested phone with a warranty. In both directions, storage (128GB or 256GB), the condition grade and battery health move the number. Get a live quote before you list yours, since prices change week to week.

Can I buy an iPhone 15 unlocked?

Yes. Some listings name a carrier and "unlocked" in the same title, which makes it hard to tell what you're getting. If you can't hold the phone before paying, ask the seller for a screenshot of the Carrier Lock line under About. A seller who won't send one is a reason to keep looking.

How much is it to get an iPhone 15 unlocked?

Nothing, if you buy it already unlocked. If yours is locked, the FCC's consumer guide says carriers must unlock eligible phones for customers in good standing once the contract or installment plan is settled, without a separate fee. Waiting periods differ by carrier and changed in 2026, so read your carrier's unlock page first.

How much is an iPhone 15 right now?

New, sealed iPhone 15s still turn up: one big-box seller listed one at $499.97 and a marketplace listed one at $572.99 on October 23, 2026. Private-seller and marketplace listings started around $250, but those come as-is, with whatever terms the seller agrees to. Tested phones sat between those two.
