iPhone 18 Buying Guide: Upgrade, Wait or Buy Certified Pre-Owned?
Updated on | 4 mins readKeep your current iPhone if it still meets your needs. Consider replacing it when a specific limitation—battery reliability, storage, camera capability or app support—is getting in the way. The new iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and Duo add real choices, but their announcement alone is not a reason for everyone to upgrade.
Specifications below use Apple’s US iPhone 18 Pro technical specifications and iPhone Duo technical specifications, checked September 9, 2026. They describe the manufacturer’s specifications, not hands-on testing by Plug.
What the new models add to your decision
iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max share A20 Pro and a variable-aperture Main camera. Pro weighs 211 grams; Pro Max weighs 249 grams. Duo weighs 254 grams and opens into a 7.6-inch display, while using Touch ID and a dual rear-camera system. That is a different form factor, not simply a larger Pro Max. See the lineup comparison for a detailed table.
US starting prices for 256GB are $1,199 for Pro, $1,299 for Pro Max and $1,999 for Duo. Apple’s Pro availability begins September 18; Duo begins October 23. Our release guide links the official pricing and date sources. None of these dates guarantees Plug inventory.
Keep, repair, replace or wait
| Your situation | A practical next step |
|---|---|
| Your phone works well | Wait for reviews and compare the specific capability you would use. |
| Battery life is the main problem | Compare a battery-service quote with a replacement’s total cost. |
| You need a replacement now | Compare currently available Certified Pre-Owned models within your budget. |
| You want a folding display | Consider Duo’s closed width, thickness, camera differences and October schedule. |
| You need a particular camera feature | Verify that capability, its limitations and your intended workflow before ordering. |
Compare Certified Pre-Owned fairly
Match the exact model, storage, cosmetic condition, battery information, included accessories, warranty and return terms. Use the current price of an actual catalog option. Do not assume a CPO phone has a new battery, or that an older phone will lose all trade-in value at the announcement.
At Plug, the comparison tool narrows the model choice; the iPhone catalog is the next step for current price, condition and availability. The new launch models are not yet available at Plug.
Make size part of the decision
Compared with the US iPhone 17 Pro, the 18 Pro adds 5 grams. The 18 Pro Max adds 16 grams over the 17 Pro Max. Duo is only 5 grams heavier than the new Pro Max, but its folded shape is wider and thicker. The weight chart helps compare the phone you know with the one you are considering. Account for your case and grip too.

Frequently asked questions
Does waiting guarantee a lower price?
No. Waiting gives you more information, but future prices, stock and trade-in quotes can change.
Does the announcement make last year’s iPhone obsolete?
No. Check current software and app compatibility. Avoid assumptions about an unannounced future support period.
Should everyone choose the highest battery figure?
No. Apple’s playback ratings are one comparison input. Size, cost, cameras and how you actually use a phone matter too.
