Apple Black Friday Gift Card Offer vs Certified Pre-Owned: The Real Price Gap

Updated on | 11 mins read

Spend $829 on an iPhone 16 at Apple over Black Friday weekend, and the receipt still says $829. The gift card that comes with it is credit for your next Apple purchase. If you're shopping Apple deals before Nov 27, the question is simple: what does each device really cost once you count that card, and how does that compare with a retailer sale or a Plug Certified device?

Apple's Black Friday gift card offer doesn't discount any price. In 2025, Apple gave an Apple Gift Card of $25 to $250 with eligible products, to spend on a later Apple purchase. At today's $829 list price, last year's $75 card would leave a new iPhone 16 at $754, against $604.99 for a Plug Certified iPhone 16 on Oct 21, 2026. Apple hasn't announced its 2026 offer, so the math below uses last year's amounts as the pattern.

Black Friday 2026 is Friday, Nov 27, and Cyber Monday is Monday, Nov 30. Apple's 2025 event ran from Nov 28 to Dec 1 and was announced on Nov 20.

What Apple's Gift Card Is Worth (and What It Isn't)

An Apple Black Friday gift card is worth its full face value only if you'd spend that money at Apple anyway. Three rules from Apple's 2025 terms decide how much it's worth to you:

  • It's for later: MacRumors reported Apple's 2025 wording that "the gift card can only be used towards future purchases." You pay the full price today.
  • It only works at Apple: Apple Store Gift Card credit is spent at Apple Stores, apple.com and the Apple Store app. It doesn't work at Amazon, Best Buy or Plug, and it can't be turned into cash.
  • It can't be returned: Once you have it, the card stays Apple credit. Check Apple's terms at purchase before you count on it.

Think of it like a rain check from a restaurant you only visit twice a year. It's worth the full amount if you were going back anyway, and close to nothing if you weren't.

Apple also left its newest models out in 2025, including the whole iPhone 17 lineup, iPhone Air and Apple Watch Ultra 3. Refurbished products and education pricing didn't qualify either.

The Real Price Gap, Line by Line

On iPhone, Apple Watch and MacBook Air, a Plug Certified device came in well under Apple's price even after the card. On AirPods Pro 3 the gap was about $19, and on AirPods 4 and the base iPad, a retailer sale beat both Apple and Plug.

Here is how each line works out, and what you save on each route. Apple's card amounts are from Apple's 2025 event as MacRumors listed them. Apple's list prices and last November's lowest retailer prices come from AppleInsider's Nov 20, 2025 comparison, except the iPhone 16 list price (Apple's own page, unlocked 128GB, read Oct 21, 2026) and both AirPods Pro 3 prices (press reports from November 2025). Plug prices are Plug's starting prices on Oct 21, 2026.

Product line Apple list price 2025 gift card Apple price after the card Lowest retailer price, Nov 2025 Plug Certified, from (Oct 21, 2026)
iPhone 16 (128GB) $829 $75 $754 $679 at Best Buy $604.99
AirPods Pro 3 $249 $50 $199 $219.99 at Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart $179.99
AirPods 4 $129 $25 $104 $69 at Amazon $89.99
Apple Watch Series 11 $399 $50 $349 $349 at Amazon $229.99 (Series 10, one generation older)
MacBook Air 13-inch (M4) $999 $175 $824 $749 at Amazon $709.99 (M2, 512GB, 8GB RAM, two generations older)
iPad (A16) $349 $50 $299 $279.99 at Amazon $289.99 (iPad 10th generation, one generation older)

Row by row, here is what you see:

  • iPhone 16: $829 minus the $75 card is $754. Plug's iPhone 16 starts at $604.99, which is $149.01 less than that net price at today's list price, and $74.01 less than Best Buy's $679 sale last November.
  • AirPods Pro 3: Apple's net price of $199 actually beat the retailer sale at $219.99, if you'd spend the $50 card. Plug's $179.99 still came in $19.01 lower.
  • AirPods 4: Amazon's $69 beat Apple's $104 net and Plug's $89.99. If the same sale comes back, take it.
  • Apple Watch: Apple's net price and Amazon matched at $349. Plug's Series 10 starts at $229.99, $119.01 less, for a watch one generation older.
  • MacBook Air: $999 minus $175 is $824. Plug's M2 starts at $709.99, $114.01 under Apple's net price and $39.01 under Amazon's sale, on an older chip.
  • iPad: Amazon's $279.99 beat Apple's $299 net, and came in $10 under Plug's iPad 10th generation.

This means the card narrows the gap but rarely closes it. Where it comes closest (AirPods Pro 3), the difference is about the price of a case.

Two notes on the Plug column. Each figure is the lowest-priced listing in that line, which can be a different storage size or condition grade than Apple's model. Grades describe looks only: every Plug device is fully tested and carries the same warranty. Prices move, and stock available on the day changes, so check the live price before you decide.

Where Apple's Gift Card Wins

The card wins when you'd spend it at Apple in the next few months anyway. Apple's biggest 2025 cards went with Macs: $175 for a 13-inch MacBook Air with M4, $200 for the 15-inch, $100 for an iPad Air or Mac mini, and $250 for a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro.

If you already plan to buy a case, a second charger, or a Mac upgrade next year from Apple, a $175 card is worth close to $175 to you. In that case, the MacBook Air math changes: $999 minus a fully used $175 card is $824 for the M4, against $709.99 for Plug's M2. That leaves $114.01 between a newer chip and an older one.

The rule is short: count the card at full value only for something you'd buy anyway. If you can't name it today, count it at less.

Apple's Own Certified Pre-Owned Prices vs Plug Certified

Apple's own refurbished store sat outside the 2025 gift card offer, so its price is the price. Here is how it compared with Plug on the same models, both read on Oct 21, 2026:

Same model Apple's refurbished price Plug's starting price You save with Plug
iPhone 15 Plus (128GB at Apple) $659 $433.99 $225.01
iPhone 16 Plus (128GB at Apple) $749 $588.99 $160.01

One more pairing worth knowing: Apple listed a refurbished iPhone 15 Pro (128GB) at $679 that day, while Plug's iPhone 16 Pro started at $625.99. That's a newer model for $53.01 less, though storage and grade can differ.

For a fuller look at how the two programs differ, see our comparison of Apple certified refurbished vs Plug pre-owned. Apple's refurbished store didn't have a like-for-like match with Plug on iPad or MacBook Air that day. Apple listed an iPad (A16) Wi-Fi + Cellular and a MacBook Air with M5 there, and Plug's iPad and MacBook Air models were older generations.

What Plug Certified Includes at That Price

Certified pre-owned is not the same as used or refurbished. Every Plug Certified device goes through Plug's 90+ Point Inspection, gets cleaned, and ships with a battery health of 80% or higher. Phones are unlocked and work with any carrier.

What comes with it:

  • Plug's 12-Month Warranty: if a hardware or software fault shows up under normal use within 12 months, Plug covers it.
  • 30-day returns: the full terms are on Plug's guarantee page.
  • Condition grades: Good, Great or Excellent, and the grade describes looks only.
  • Free shipping on US orders, with Afterpay and Affirm at checkout.

Plug's prices run up to 70% off retail, and the saving comes off the price you pay today.

What to Expect From Apple in 2026

Apple hasn't confirmed its 2026 Black Friday event, dates or gift card amounts as of Oct 21, 2026, and any of the details below may change.

If you want the wider picture of whether Apple does Black Friday deals at all, the expected shape is a gift card event running from Black Friday, Nov 27, through Cyber Monday, Nov 30. Amounts could differ from 2025.

The lineup has moved since last year. On Sept 18, 2026, Apple put the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 on sale. That makes several of last year's card models (AirPods 4, Apple Watch Series 11, MacBook Air with M4) the previous generation. Apple hasn't said which models will carry a card this year. Since Apple left the newest iPhones out in 2025, expect the iPhone 18 Pro to sit outside the offer too, though that's an expectation, not an announcement.

We'll update this article once Apple launches its 2026 offer and the amounts are available.

How to Run the Numbers Yourself

Here is how to check any Apple deal yourself:

  1. Find Apple's price: Use Apple's own page for the exact model and storage, and note the gift card amount once Apple lists it.
  2. Subtract the card only if you'll use it: If you can name what you'd buy at Apple with it, subtract the full card. If not, subtract less, or nothing.
  3. Compare at the same storage: Set that number beside the best retailer sale and a Plug Certified price for the same model and storage size, then add the warranty and return terms to each.

The cheapest of the three is your Black Friday deal, whichever store it's in, and the best deals this year may not carry a gift card at all. Plug keeps its Black Friday tech deals in one collection, and the real math on new vs Plug Certified iPhone is worked through in a separate guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you return an Apple gift card?

No. Apple says Apple Gift Cards can't be returned or exchanged. What Apple does with the Black Friday card when you return the device that earned it isn't clear from its terms, so ask at checkout.

What can you buy with an Apple gift card?

That depends on which kind of card it is, and Apple's offer doesn't say. An Apple Gift Card covers devices plus App Store apps, games, subscriptions and iCloud+. If it's Apple Store Gift Card credit, Apple's terms rule out apps, subscriptions and its other media services. Check the card's terms before you count on it to cover a subscription.

Does Apple do Black Friday on refurbished?

No. Apple's refurbished store keeps its own prices, which Apple describes as savings of up to 15%, with a one-year limited warranty. On refurbished iPhones, Apple says the battery and outer shell are new. There's no seasonal card on top, so the listed price is the full deal.

How can you get an Apple gift card cheaper?

Not by a lower face value. Last November, Amazon gave $15 in Amazon credit with $100 in Apple Gift Cards, Best Buy gave $15, and Target $10. Those bonuses are store credit at the retailer, usually with limits and expiry dates, and they aren't guaranteed every year.
