Google Pixel eSIM Setup: How to Get Past “Contact Your Carrier”
Updated on | 5 mins readIf your Google Pixel stops at “Contact Verizon to set up your eSIM,” “Contact T-Mobile to set up your eSIM,” or “Contact AT&T to set up your eSIM,” do not panic. This is a known issue in the Pixel eSIM setup flow that can appear on unlocked, bring-your-own-device phones.
The message itself does not prove that your phone is locked or defective. In many cases, you can skip the stalled carrier lookup and install the carrier-provided eSIM directly.
Quick answer: Connect to Wi-Fi, get an eSIM QR code or activation details from your carrier, then use the QR scanner inside your Pixel’s SIM settings.
Note: Menu names can vary slightly by Pixel model, carrier, and Android version.

Before you start
- Connect your Pixel to a reliable Wi-Fi network.
- Install any available Android system updates.
- Have your carrier account login ready.
- Get your eSIM QR code or activation details from your carrier’s app, account portal, email, or support team.
If you are asking carrier support for help, tell them you are activating an eSIM on a BYOD, or bring-your-own-device, phone. Some carriers and newer Pixel models can provision an eSIM directly without a QR code, so follow the carrier’s instructions if they offer that option.
Set up your eSIM with a QR code
- Connect to Wi-Fi and check for updates. A stable internet connection is required to download the eSIM profile.
- Get the eSIM from your carrier. Open the carrier’s app or account portal, check your activation email, or ask support for a BYOD eSIM QR code.
- Open the eSIM setup screen. Go to Settings › Network & internet › SIMs › Add SIM, then choose Set up an eSIM or Download a SIM.
- Skip the stalled carrier lookup. If your Pixel asks you to choose a carrier or shows the carrier-contact message, tap Use a different network or Next when that option appears. Then scan the QR code your carrier provided.
- Download the profile. Follow the prompts to add and enable the eSIM, then restart your Pixel.
- Confirm the connection. Return to Settings › Network & internet › SIMs, make sure the carrier line is enabled, and test a call, text message, and mobile data.
If the QR code is displayed on the same Pixel, look for Scan from photo or the option to upload the QR image. The available wording depends on your Android version.
Troubleshoot QR code and activation problems
No QR code?
Check your carrier’s app, online account, or activation email first. If there is no code, contact the carrier and ask for BYOD eSIM activation. The carrier may send a QR code, push the eSIM directly to your phone, or give you manual activation details.
QR code says it is invalid or already used?
Many carrier QR codes can be used only once. Ask the carrier to confirm that the eSIM is assigned to the correct device and issue a fresh profile or QR code.
QR code will not scan?
Increase the brightness on the screen showing the code, clean the Pixel’s camera lens, and make sure the full code fits inside the scanner. You can also use Scan from photo when available.
Enter the eSIM manually
From the QR scanner, tap Need help? or Enter activation code. Enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code exactly as your carrier provided them. Do not guess these values.
Find your EID or IMEI
Your carrier may ask for one or more device identification numbers before it can assign the eSIM.
- EID: Open Settings › About phone › SIM status, then find EID.
- IMEI: Open Settings › About phone, then find IMEI. If your Pixel shows more than one IMEI, ask the carrier which one it needs.
Still stuck?
Ask your carrier to confirm that the eSIM is active, assigned to your Pixel’s exact IMEI or EID, and eligible for BYOD activation. If the profile is correct but still will not download, restart the phone and ask the carrier to issue a fresh profile.
If the carrier confirms that provisioning is correct and the Pixel still cannot load the eSIM, contact Plug Support. Confirmed device defects may be eligible for help under the 12-Month Plug Warranty.
You are not stuck with the carrier message
For most customers who encounter this setup-flow bug, using the carrier’s QR code or manual activation details is the direct path around the dead end. Once the profile is installed, the Pixel’s eSIM hardware and normal cellular controls work as expected.
